Good morning from Iceland. Today’s trip will take us from Iceland to the icebergs in Greenland where we have a fuel and lunch stop on to Canada (Iqaluit, formerly known as Frobisher Bay) which is the destination of the day.
Nights here in Reykjavík are short and the sun is up since 4am while it actually never got really dark.
Weathers for today’s flights look pretty favorable which is not a given especially in Ilulissat where the rather small airport only offers fair weather approaches requiring us to actually see the runway much earlier compared to a typical ILS.
In order to depart, we need to have airport terminal forecasts (TAF) of two airports that indicate that there will be acceptable weather conditions at the time of our arrival. For Ilulissat, this TAF is only issued at around 10 UTC which means we can’t depart before. The TAF of Sondrestrom is there and shows good weather. The current weather at Ilulissat is in line with that so we are hopeful but weather at coastal airports in Greeland (and there is nothing else as the rest of Greenland is one gigantic mountain) changes quickly and good weather is a rare thing.
More to come…
