The only word to describe this flight is: Amazing!!! Leaving Reykjavík at 10:30am (we had to wait for the first Greenland airport weather forecast, too many deadly accidents made the Icelandic authorities become very strict on this), we took a westerly course towards Greenland. After half an hour over the open Atlantic we reached the coast of Greenland where we were very lucky to experience rare good weather and the blue sky provided some amazing views:
After flying above Greenland for roughly two hours and a lot of terrain where we would definitely not want an engine to fail, we reached the West coast of Greenland. We cancelled IFR and descended to a very low altitude into an amazing fjord where a huge glacier drifts into the Atlantic, spewing out an amazing formation of icebergs. The weather was perfect and so we decided to take a litte sightseeing tour through the fjord with its glacier and the icebergs. Views were just unbelievable and probably not many people in this world get to see this:
After performing a 180 degree turn in the fjord, we took a right along the coast into Ilulissat airport. The 850m runway ending at the base of a hill was an interesting experience but the landing was perfect.
After all the 5 planes were re-fueled and everybody has had an impressive encounter with the local XXL-sized mosquitos of which there are plenty, a van took us to the “Arctic Hotel” for a scenic lunch with a great outlook over the sea and the icebergs.
